Austin PD releases video in in-custody death after taser deployment

The Austin Police (APD) continues to investigate the in-custody death that occurred during a call initiated on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 6:31 p.m., in the 7600 block of Grover Avenue. APD understands the importance of building trust within our community and will continue working diligently to develop a strong and trusting relationship. As per our policy, we share information about a critical incident in a timely manner. APD is working with Austin Police Oversight (APO) and the City of Austin to release this information today. The news release includes links to the relevant audio and video from the ongoing investigation. The Travis County District Attorney's Office and APO have reviewed the audio and video materials identified for public release. The details provided today are preliminary, as we are very early in the investigation. The subject officers involved in this incident have the following years of service with the Department: Officer Justin Wright – 7 years, 8 months Officer Kate Hagemeier – 6 years, 3 months Officer Carl Chester – 3 years Officer Jeremmy Santos Beltre – 2 years, 8 months Officer Calvin Fusilier – 6 years, 11 months Officer Gabriella Fekete – 7 years, 8 months Officer Benjamin Ye – 9 months Per APD protocol, the officers have been placed on administrative leave. APD will conduct two concurrent investigations into this incident: a criminal investigation conducted by the APD Special Investigations Unit in conjunction with the Travis County District Attorney's Office and an administrative investigation conducted by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, with oversight from Austin Police Oversight (APO). Transparency and accountability are key elements needed to serve and build relationships within the Austin community. Below is the chain of events related to this critical incident that will help you understand what occurred prior, during, and after the event. On June 6, 2026, at approximately 5:42 p.m., APD received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a White male wearing a blue shirt and gray shorts who had broken a vehicle window and was attempting to flag down passing vehicles in the 7700 block of Woodrow Avenue. Callers reported the male was bleeding, sitting in the roadway, and behaving erratically. Multiple callers described him acting abnormally, dazed, and having blood on his arms. Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) was notified at approximately 5:43 p.m. and began responding. Still photos of vehicle Between approximately 5:43 p.m. and 5:58 p.m., additional callers reported seeing the male near the intersection of Princeton Avenue and Woodrow Avenue. Witnesses described him as running through the area with blood on his arms, acting erratically, and moving northbound and southbound on Woodrow Avenue. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate him, and subsequently canceled the ATCEMS response. At 6:31 p.m., APD received another call from a resident in the 7600 block of Grover Avenue reporting that someone was attempting to get inside their residence. The caller reported hearing banging at the front door and initially believed someone was trying to kick the door open. The caller armed himself with a shotgun while remaining inside the residence. Additional callers reported a shirtless White male in the area who was bleeding, behaving erratically, and banging on neighborhood doors. ATCEMS was dispatched and began responding to the scene. At 6:35 p.m., APD officers arrived on scene and located the male, later identified as Josh Ryan Trumble, 10/20/1993, lying in the front yard of a residence in the 7600 block of Grover Avenue. Simultaneously, while officers began to make contact with Mr. Trumble, 9-1-1 received a separate call reporting a burglary that occurred shortly before to a separate home in the 7700 block of Woodrow Avenue. Ring camera footage captured a male matching Mr. Trumble's description forcibly slamming into the front door of the residence, forcing entry into the home. Officers responding to that burglary located blood evidence, damage consistent with forced entry, signs that the suspect had moved through portions of the residence before leaving, and a broken window at the rear of the house. Witness descriptions, physical characteristics, and video evidence led investigators to believe Mr. Trumble was the same individual involved in the burglary. At 6:36 p.m., officers observed that Mr. Trumble was shirtless and had numerous lacerations on his body. As officers approached, Mr. Trumble sat up, displaying behavior that was consistent with a possible medical or psychological crisis. ATCEMS was updated regarding Mr. Trumble's condition while officers attempted to communicate with him, provide assistance, and de-escalate the situation. Additional officers arrived to assist. Officers issued verbal commands, directing Mr. Trumble to remain on the ground and place his hands behind his back. Mr. Trumble initially complied by rolling onto his stomach and placing his hands behind his head. Officers attempted to take him into custody while awaiting ATCEMS. At 6:37 p.m., officers advised over the radio that they were detaining Mr. Trumble and that responding units could slow their response. As Officer Benjamin Ye attempted to secure the subject in handcuffs, Mr. Trumble pulled his hands underneath his body and appeared to push upward against officers attempting to restrain him. Officer Justin Wright deployed his TASER on Mr. Trumble. At 6:38 p.m., officers advised over the radio that following the TASER deployment, they were able to place Mr. Trumble in handcuffs. Within seconds of being handcuffed, officers observed a change in Mr. Trumble's condition. He became unresponsive. Officers immediately rolled him onto his side and observed signs that he required immediate medical attention. At 6:39 p.m., officers notified ATCEMS of his updated condition. Officers rolled him onto his back and checked for a pulse. When no pulse was detected, officers immediately initiated CPR and requested ATCEMS to expedite their response. The incident was upgraded to a cardiac arrest. Officers continued CPR until Austin Fire (AFD) and ATCEMS personnel arrived and assumed lifesaving efforts. Emergency medical personnel continued advanced resuscitative measures for approximately 38 minutes. At 7:18 p.m., despite lifesaving measures by APD officers, and continued efforts by ATCEMS and AFD personnel, Mr. Trumble was pronounced deceased at the scene. Because Mr. Trumble died after being detained by APD officers, this incident is being investigated as an in-custody death. APD supervisors responded to the scene and initiated the department's critical incident protocols. Crime scene security was established, witness information was collected, and investigators began documenting both the death investigation and the related burglary investigation. The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner. No officers or other members of the public were injured during the arrest of Mr. Trumble. Currently, there are no charges pending, though the case remains under active investigation. This incident was captured on body-worn cameras and a private community member's Ring camera. Videos do not always capture everything the officer or witnesses saw or experienced during the incident; however, the footage helps us understand what occurred. In compliance with state law, that prohibits the release of certain information, and to maintain the integrity of the investigation, the materials have been redacted.
