Thin Blue Lenz Neutral Summary
On Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 1:58 a.m., APD responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a shooting at Buford’s, located at 700 West 6th Street. APD Officers, alongside Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS), arrived on the scene within 57 seconds and located multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds and immediately began rendering aid. Austin Fire (AFD) also assisted on scene. Preliminary investigation revealed that a black Cadillac SUV was traveling southbound on Rio Grande Street when it pulled alongside Buford’s and the driver of the vehicle began firing a pistol into a crowd gathered outside the bar. Several individuals were struck by gunfire. The vehicle then continued westbound on West 6th Street and parked near the intersection of West 6th and Wood streets. The driver exited the suspect vehicle armed with a rifle. The suspect fired at a pedestrian, striking them, while moving back towards the bar area. As additional officers arrived, they were directed to the suspect’s location and worked to move bystanders to safety and establish a secure perimeter. At 2:03 a.m., three officers located the suspect near the intersection of West 6th Street and West Avenue. They observed the suspect carrying a rifle. The suspect discharged his firearm in the direction of officers. The three officers discharged their firearms at the suspect, striking him multiple times. Officers approached the suspect, took him into custody, and requested medical assistance. The suspect was later pronounced deceased on the scene. The suspect was identified as Ndiaga Diagne, a 53-year-old Black male. As the investigation has progressed, APD has learned of additional victims. APD is now aware of a total of 19 people, including the suspect, who sustained injuries from the incident. Three people, including the suspect, were pronounced deceased on the scene. The two deceased victims on scene were identified as Savitha Shan, 21 years of age, and Ryder Harrington, 19 years of age. In addition, 16 gunshot victims were treated at local hospitals. On Monday, March 2, 2025, at 2:50 p.m., one of the victims, identified as Jorge Pederson, 30 years of age, was pronounced deceased at the hospital. At this time, two victims remain at a local hospital, with one in critical condition. The officers’ encounter with the suspect was captured on officers’ body-worn cameras, on HALO surveillance video, and on witness video. Video from a parked vehicle showed some of the events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. These videos do not always capture everything the officers or witnesses saw or experienced during the incident; however, the footage helps us understand what occurred.
