On May 31, 2026, at about 9:10 p.m., an Oak Park Police officer conducted a traffic stop at the Shell gas station at Harrison Street and Austin Boulevard. During a protective pat-down, a concealed firearm was found. A struggle occurred; as the officer attempted to handcuff the individual, the person regained control of the gun and fled, and the officer fired his service weapon, striking the individual four times. The individual died at Loyola University Medical Center at 9:59 p.m. The officer was transported to Loyola and released from the hospital on June 1, remaining on medical leave for an injury sustained during the incident. On June 30, 2026, in response to FOIA requests and media inquiries, the Village released footage from three body-worn cameras, one in-vehicle dashboard camera and two gas station security cameras. The footage may be disturbing and is released consistent with the investigation by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force, conducted in coordination with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
