Phoenix PD Release Bodycam Video of Fatal Shooting of Wanted Sex Crimes Suspect

The Phoenix Police Department has released a Critical Incident Briefing video to provide details as we currently understand them related to an officer-involved shooting from June 11, 2026. Just before 6 p.m. Thursday, officers with the department’s Tactical Support Bureau (TSB) were following a male driver on Pinnacle Peak Road with a felony warrant in connection with an investigation involving sexual conduct with a minor. At the intersection of Pinnacle Peak Rd. and 23rd Avenue, a K-9 Unit officer deployed a vehicle interdiction device called a Grappler, which stopped the vehicle in the roadway. Another officer used their unmarked vehicle to pin the driver’s door closed, containing the man in his car. While in his vehicle, the officer reported seeing the man raise a handgun. The officer-involved shooting occurred when the officer fired his handgun and the K-9 officer fired his shotgun, striking the man. An officer then discharged their 37-millimeter launcher, which deploys a foam rubber less-lethal direct impact projectile to attempt to gain compliance and is only used by members of the TSB, to verify it was safe to approach him. Once officers were able to approach the man safely, they took him into custody and provided medical aid until the Phoenix Fire Department responded and pronounced him deceased. The officers involved in this shooting are assigned to the Fugitive Apprehension & Investigation Detail and the K-9 Unit and have 23 and 18 years of service with Phoenix PD, respectively. This incident is the subject of a criminal investigation conducted by the Major Incident Division of the Arizona Department of Public Safety and will be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. It is also the subject of an administrative investigation being conducted by the Phoenix Police Department. Conclusions about whether the actions of the officer are consistent with department policy and the law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete.
