Tucson Police SWAT shooting during home invasion standoff; 15-year-old killed; 14-year-old suspect charged

On April 6, 2026, around 7:30 p.m., Tucson Police Department (TPD) SWAT and Hostage Negotiations Unit responded to a home invasion in the 3700 block of South Lundy Avenue after a 911 call reported an armed robbery at a business in the 2500 block of North Campbell Avenue. Investigators said two male suspects forced entry, assaulted an employee, and robbed the business of money and a vehicle key before fleeing in a stolen vehicle. A 8-year-old child was inside the home during the incident. A K-9 unit located the stolen vehicle near West Ajo Way, and the occupants ran into the residence, prompting officers to evacuate the child safely. After several hours of negotiation intended to secure a peaceful surrender, authorities say one suspect emerged from the home, raised an object at officers, and was shot by two SWAT officers. A K-9 was deployed and the suspect resisted, leading to the use of a less-lethal projectile. Emergency aid was provided, and Tucson Fire Department transported the individual to a hospital, where the person died from injuries. The deceased has been identified as Joannie Jose Armenta, 15, with authorities noting the use of a toy gun wrapped in cloth to simulate a weapon. The other juvenile in the incident, a 14-year-old identified as Mario Muruato, surrendered at the scene and was charged with First Degree Murder, Armed Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Kidnapping, and Theft of Means of Transportation. PRCIT activated to handle the criminal investigation, with the Pima County Sheriff's Department assigned primary responsibility. The Tucson Police Department will conduct a parallel administrative investigation, and all findings will be presented to the Pima County Attorney’s Office upon completion.
